What We're Building

What Is RAG, and Why Does Your AI Need It?

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) lets a large language model look up your own content before it answers. Instead of relying on what it memorized in training, the model gets the most relevant passages from your documents, databases and apps, and answers from those passages only. Our RAG development services cover every layer of that system, from the data pipeline to the chat window your team actually uses.

An LLM on Its Own
  • Knows nothing that happened after its training cutoff
  • Has never seen your contracts, tickets or product docs
  • Can't tell you where an answer came from
  • Fills gaps with answers that only sound right
  • Needs costly fine-tuning to learn new facts
  • Treats every user the same, whatever their access
An LLM With a RAG Layer We Build
  • Reads your newest content as soon as it's indexed
  • Answers from your own policies, data and history
  • Cites the exact document and section behind each reply
  • Says so plainly when it can't find an answer
  • Learns new facts by re-indexing, with no retraining
  • Only retrieves what each user is allowed to see

Still deciding between RAG, a custom model or both? Our generative AI development team can help you compare the options, and our guide on how to build an LLM explains when training your own model is worth it.

Choosing the Right Approach

RAG vs Fine-Tuning vs Prompt Engineering

These three aren't rivals. Most production systems we build use RAG for knowledge, prompt work for tone and format, and fine-tuning only when there's a clear reason for it. Here's how they compare.

The Budgets Are Real Now

Enterprise spending on generative AI rose sixfold in a single year, and knowledge assistants are where much of it lands first.

Re-Indexing Beats Retraining

Updating an index takes minutes. Retraining a model to learn new facts takes weeks and a GPU budget.

Buyers Now Expect Proof

Teams want citations and accuracy scores before they trust an AI answer, and a well-built RAG system gives them both.

Architectures We Build

Eight RAG Architectures We Build, and When Each One Fits

There's no single right way to build RAG. The architecture depends on your data, the questions people ask, and how much the system should be allowed to do on its own. Here's how we match them.

Hybrid Search RAG

Vector search and keyword search, merged and reranked. The most dependable starting point for content full of product names, codes and acronyms.

  • Best for help centers and policy search
  • BM25 plus dense vectors
  • Cross-encoder reranking

Conversational RAG

Follows the thread of a conversation, turns short follow-ups into full search queries, and remembers what the user already asked.

  • Best for support and internal chat
  • Follow-up query rewriting
  • Session memory with limits

Agentic RAG

An agent plans the lookup, searches several sources, compares what it finds, and can act through your tools before it answers.

  • Best for multi-system questions
  • Tool calls with guardrails
  • Full action logs

GraphRAG

Builds a knowledge graph from your content, so the system can answer questions that span many documents and the links between them.

  • Best for legal and compliance
  • Entity and relation extraction
  • Multi-hop reasoning with sources

Multimodal RAG

Retrieves from images, scanned forms, tables, diagrams and transcripts alongside regular text, so nothing important is left out of the index.

  • Best for claims and field service
  • OCR and table parsing
  • Image and audio search

Private, On-Prem RAG

Open-weight models and a self-hosted vector database inside your VPC or data center, so no data ever leaves your network.

  • Best for regulated teams
  • Self-hosted Llama or Mistral
  • Air-gapped options

Self-Correcting RAG

The system grades its own retrieved context and draft answer, then searches again or declines when the evidence is weak.

  • Best for high-stakes answers
  • Relevance grading per passage
  • Re-query or refuse on weak context

Multi-Tenant SaaS RAG

One retrieval layer serving many customers inside your product, with each customer's data kept fully separate.

  • Best for B2B SaaS products
  • Per-tenant namespaces and keys
  • Usage metering per account
What We Build Into It

Core Features We Build Into Every RAG System

Twenty-four features across four layers. Pick a layer to see what goes into it and how we engineer each piece.

Retrieval & Accuracy

We build retrieval to find the right passage on the first try, because the model can only be as good as the context it's given.

Structure-Aware Chunking

Split along headings, clauses and tables, with section titles kept as metadata.

Hybrid Search

Vectors catch meaning, BM25 catches exact terms like SKUs and policy codes.

Reranking

A cross-encoder rescores candidates so the model reads the passages that matter.

Query Rewriting

Vague or follow-up questions become complete queries or smaller sub-questions.

Metadata Filters

Date, product, region and type filters narrow the search before ranking.

Grounded, Cited Answers

Answers stay inside retrieved text, with every claim linked to its source.

Want to see how retrieval would perform on your documents? Let's test it.Book a Call

Security & Governance

We build security into retrieval itself, so a clever prompt can't talk the system into showing something it shouldn't.

Permission-Aware Retrieval

Access lists synced from SharePoint, Drive or your app and enforced per user.

PII Detection & Redaction

Names, account numbers and health details masked or excluded at ingestion.

Prompt-Injection Defense

Retrieved text is treated as data, never as instructions, and tested before launch.

Audit Trails

Every question, passage and answer logged with the user and a timestamp.

Private Model Hosting

Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock or Vertex AI with no training on your data, or self-hosted.

Data Residency

Indexes and logs stay in the cloud region your contracts require.

User Experience

We design for the people who use the assistant every day, so it earns their trust in the first week.

Chat, Search or Embedded UI

A web app, a Slack or Teams bot, or a widget inside your product.

Source Preview Panel

One click opens the exact passage behind an answer.

Feedback Loop

Thumbs up or down, plus a reason, flows into a review queue.

Multi-Language Answers

Replies in the user's language, even when sources are in another.

Suggested Follow-Ups

Next questions drawn from what's actually in your content.

Human Handoff

Low-confidence chats route to a person with history and sources attached.

Scheduled Re-Indexing

Each source syncs on its own rhythm, from minutes to nightly.

Model Routing

Easy questions go to a fast, low-cost model and hard ones to a stronger one.

Caching & Token Budgets

Semantic caching and per-request limits keep spend predictable.

Monitoring & Alerts

Tracing on every request, with alerts on latency, cost or feedback drops.

How We Architect It

How We Build a RAG Pipeline, Stage by Stage

Every RAG system we ship moves through the same six stages. What changes from one client to the next are the decisions inside each stage, and that is where accuracy is won or lost.

Connect & Ingest Your Sources

We connect to SharePoint, Confluence, Drive, your databases or your own app, and pull documents along with their permissions and metadata.

What We Design Around

Why Most RAG Pilots Stall, and How We Build Around It

A demo that answers ten handpicked questions is easy. A system that answers ten thousand real ones, from messy documents, for people with different access rights, is a different job. Here's what usually breaks, and what we do about it from week one.

Where Typical RAG Pilots Break

  • Confident, wrong answers: the model sounds sure even when the retrieved text doesn't back it up.
  • Missed passages: fixed-size chunks cut tables and clauses in half.
  • A stale index: the policy changed Monday, and on Friday the bot still quotes the old one.
  • Leaky permissions: a shared index surfaces files people could never open themselves.
  • No quality metric: every prompt tweak is a guess and every release a gamble.
  • Creeping cost: longer prompts push replies past five seconds and the bill past budget.

How We Engineer Around It

  • Grounding checks: clear refusal rules, so the assistant says "I don't know" instead of guessing.
  • Structure-aware retrieval: layout-aware chunking, hybrid search and reranking tuned on your questions.
  • Incremental sync: edits and deletions flow through from every source, not just new files.
  • Access enforced per query: permissions synced from each source system, checked for every user.
  • A golden test set: automatic scoring and release gates before anything ships.
  • Cost controls: caching, model routing and a token budget for every request.

RAG Development Services FAQs

Short, direct answers to the questions buyers ask us most.

Have a question we didn't cover?

Talk to a RAG engineer for 30 minutes. You'll leave with a clear next step, whether or not you work with us.

Ask Us Directly

RAG development services cover the design, build and upkeep of retrieval-augmented generation systems. That includes connecting your data sources, parsing and indexing documents, setting up search and reranking, choosing and prompting the LLM, building the user interface, and testing accuracy before and after launch. The result is an AI assistant that answers from your own content and cites its sources.

It depends on how many data sources you connect, how clean and structured your documents are, your security and deployment needs, and whether you need agents, GraphRAG or a custom interface. Instead of quoting a generic range, we scope each project on a free call and send a written proposal with a clear breakdown of scope, team and timeline.

A pilot usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. A production RAG system takes 8 to 14 weeks, and enterprise platforms with many sources or agents take 3 to 6 months. The biggest variable is your data: clean, well-structured documents move much faster than scanned files spread across many tools.

RAG gives a model access to your knowledge at the moment it answers, so it stays current and can cite sources. Fine-tuning changes the model itself to teach it a style, format or narrow skill, and it has to be retrained whenever the facts change. For most business knowledge, RAG is cheaper and easier to maintain, and the two can be combined when there is a good reason.

We reduce hallucinations at three points. Better retrieval, through structure-aware chunking, hybrid search and reranking, gives the model the right passages. Strict prompts and grounding checks keep the answer inside those passages, with a clear refusal when the answer isn't there. Automated evaluation on a golden question set catches regressions before each release.

Your data stays under your control. We use enterprise model endpoints from providers like Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI that do not train on your prompts or documents, or we host open-weight models inside your own cloud or data center. Retrieval respects each user's existing permissions, and data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

We work with OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Llama and Mistral models, and with vector stores such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Milvus, pgvector and Elasticsearch. We choose by testing a few options on your own documents and questions, and we often start with a database you already run.

Yes. We start by evaluating your current pipeline against a test set built from real user questions, which shows exactly where answers go wrong. Then we fix the weak layers, usually chunking, retrieval or prompts, and add monitoring so quality doesn't slip again.
